The grand dame of the restaurant oyster roast game is Bowens Island Restaurant, located on an island between James Island and Folly Beach. The restaurant, in operation since the 1940s, is known for its locally-harvested oysters and fried seafood platters. It holds an oyster roast every evening in the basement, an area that people refer to as "the dungeon." It’s unheated, but there are oysters steaming in 30-quart stock pots, with cooks shoveling them onto the tables without pause.
